The Lady Chapel houses the abbey’s 15th century oak chest. It is now secured with three Victorian padlocks. This was to ensure that the chest could only be opened if both church wardens and the rector were present as each had a separate key. Inside the chest is a small locked compartment for which only the rector had a key. The chest originally contained church silver used in services as well as parish registers and other civil documents.
